Porthcothan Bay is situated on the Atlantic North Coast of Cornwall 5 miles south of Padstow, and 10 miles to the North of Newquay.
Porthcothan is an un-spoilt bay with a large sandy beach, excellent surfing ( with lifeguards between May & September) and beautiful cliff scenery - so good that the BBC use Porthcothan as one of their locations for Poldark.
There is a fantastic local shop, www.porthcothanbaystores.co.uk which offers Barista Coffees, award winning pasties, ice cream and a host of local produce. St Merryn village is 3 miles away with 2 pubs, The Cornish Arms & the Farmers Arms as well as a village store, a bakery, a petrol station & restaurants & take-away's
The bay is on the North Cornwall Coastal Path - easily accessible from the house, with beautiful coastal walks to Bedruthan Steps - 3 miles, Treyarnon Bay - 2 miles or Constantine & Trevose 3-5 miles.
Tygwella is situated on the headland above the bay, and the beach is only a short walk across the headland and down the public footpath (5-10 minutes).
There are a number of other beaches in the area, Treyarnon, Constantine, Harlyn & Boobies are all within 5 miles to the North, & Watergate and Mawgan Porth are within 7 miles to the south.
The area is blessed with good restaurants- Jamie Oliver's 15 and the Beach Hut at Watergate, the Scarlet Hotel at Mawgan Porth , and then in Padstow (5 miles) Rick Steins various establishments along with the Prawn on the Lawn and Paul Ainsworth. There are also a number of good bistro pubs in the area.
The village of St.Merryn (3 miles) has a small village shop, a bakery, a surf hire shop and two pubs, a Chip shop & a Chinese. There is a Tesco at Padstow and all of the major supermarkets deliver to Porthcothan via internet delivery.
The Trevose championship Golf Course is 3 miles away, and there are a number of other courses in the area.
There is a cinema at Wadebridge (7 miles) and a zoo, aquarium, swimming pool and other leisure attractions in Newquay (10 miles).
